Bio Nerd Inspiration

Standard

This week I decided to make something from scratch.  AND that something had to be a zipper.  Once I saw this video, I knew it had to be done!!!

I’ve been following Secretlifeofabionerd’s youtube channel for months now.  I adore her!

I don’t have much solid fabric, so I decided to spice it up with a floral print.

I’m pretty sure I got this fabric at Hancocks.  (I’ve accumulated a lot of stuff rather quickly.)  But isn’t it fab?  I envision this cute skirt with a light green shirt, (Hmm…I have no light green fabric…Yay! Excuse to go shopping!)

The skirt is still in progress, and hopefully it will be done soon.  It’s actually coming out rather well.  It might be my best project to date!

Stay fab!!

Jo-Ann’s Pattern Haul

Standard

So, last week Jo Ann’s had a Simplicity pattern sale.  5 for $5?  Who can beat that?  Though I’ve never worked with real patterns, I’m rather excited about the challenge!!!  (And no, I didn’t go crazy with patterns that looked overly complicated…at bunch of them were “learn to sew”, so theoretically they’ll be rather simple.)

I thought on Friday’s I’d show vintage patterns that I’m obsessed with (and have yet to find in my size), but this 50s inspired pattern is close enough for now (mainly because I’m so geeked about it).

It’s Simplicity 3673, for those those interested.  And I love it.  I can’t wait.  Or really I can, because it’s not my project for next week.

This is the fabric I’m saving for it, most likely for the dress in the middle.  But I love it to much to risk ruining it….**sigh** Someday, over the rainbow….

Stay Fab!

Wednesday’s Word of the Day….Elastic!!

Standard

So, when I decided to sew, I stalked you-tube for videos demonstrating beginner projects. (I figured if they could do it, I could do it too, right?) A lot of the projects I saw included elastic, so when I received a bit for my birthday, I was quite pleased. It can be used for a lot of different things, the top of a skirt, pull in the waist of a dress, off the shoulder tops and even underwear. I honestly think it’s the best way to avoid zippers. The only tricky part is that you have to pull the elastic while sewing, which made straight lines a bit challenging. Oh well, nobody is perfect, right?

Here’s the dress I’ve been working on, using elastic and two 3XL t-shirts.

The print was way to much for a mens shirt (in my humble opinion), but I love it as a dress. It’s not perfect, lining up the skirt on the elastic proved quite difficult (because of the pulling). There are pleats in the front, which came out off-center, so I needed a way to make it look intentional. So I stared at it, and stared at it some more.

Bows fix everything!!! Making a bow, and putting it above the messed up pleat made it look like it belonged. Yay!

Regardless, I love it and can’t wait to wear it. Expect updated pictures when I hit the town in my new duds!

Stay Fab!

The Magical Disappearing Bunny!!

Standard

So…I know I’ve vanished for the past week or so.  Bad Bunny! I know, I know.  Work has been crazy, and friends have been dragging me all over the world.  Okay, not literally the world, but you know what I mean.  But I have been working on a new project!!!  Look at this t-shirt.

Funky Fabric, eh? And my apartment is a mess, I know. It's usually better. You'll see!

I saw two of these at a thrift store and absolutely went crazy for the fabric.  As a 3XL men’s shirt it leaves a lot to be desired.  BUT…my gut tells me it will make a rather fabulous dress!  It’s almost done, and I can’t wait to show everyone!

XOXO

Happy Birthday to Meeeeeee!!…and I HATE Nylon.

Standard

So, my birthday was Friday.  It was rather fabulous, outside of my door breaking, which is another story for another day.  I spent time with friends, and family.  I’ve been hard at work sewing/reconstructing a dress for my b-day party last night, but you’ll just have to wait and see!!

I was wandering through a new thrift store near my neighborhood, where I happened upon this gorgeous beauty.

Isn't it pretty?

The back (ignore my messy living room)

It's very long and flowy.

She wanted $30 for it, but I managed to talk her down to $17.  The print (I’d take another picture, but my camera is dead) on the nylon/polyester layer has small pink flowers, with little silver studs sewn in.  I love it!  However, it isn’t exactly a party dress.  So, I hacked it up, creating a short party dress.  Though it’s shorter than planned, and apparently nylon is one of the hardest fabrics to work with (which my mother told me AFTER it was done.  HOW RUDE!! Just kidding).  But, here is the finished product!

The finished product!!

I had to add a hint of purple. It's my favorite!

My party was sooo much fun!  My friends are so awesome!  I requested a cake with fondant, and the Fabulous Amira (yes, this is what I call her) actually made one for me!!

My gorgeous Birthday Cake!!

Though you can’t see it well in this photo, the pink dots on the top are actually buttons made of fondant.  I’m halfway into a sugar coma just thinking about it!!  Yum yum!!!

But….there is more to come!  I’m not quite certain of what my next project will be, because I’ve gotten so much fabric for my birthday!   I think it might be halter dress….We’ll see next week!

a year to learn…a year to save

Standard

I’m a bit of a shopaholic.  Really.  It’s kind of sad.  I could blame my family (who goes to the mall every Saturday like clockwork), but I can really only blame myself.  What can I say, I love clothes!

But anyway, I’ve decided that this year, starting on my Birthday (which is Friday), I’m going to experiment.  I will not buy clothing at full price.  Nope nope!  Instead (for the next year) I’ll do one of the following:

1) Thrift!  — There are tons of thrift stores in Memphis, and I LOVE them.  (Today I literally bought a gorgeous skirt for $2  You’ll see it soon.).

2) Reconstruct! — That gorgeous skirt is now a dress.  AND I even got a few huge mens shirts with beautiful print that will become dresses.

3) Sew from scratch! — I’ve bought myself a sewing machine.  Isn’t she gorgeous?  And yes, I know how to sew…sort of.   Be afraid.  Be VERY afraid.

Brothers CS6000i. It has mixed reviews online, but I haven't had any problems thusfar. As of now she works like a dream!

I’m really excited about all of the projects I have planned.  You’ll see.  Even a shopaholic like me can manage to be sexy fabulous on a budget.

Stay Fab!
